The first method is simply to provide detectors at their listed spacing often 30 feet center to center and within half the distance which is 15 feet to walls. The last time i looked at nfpa the requirement was 4 to 12 inches down from the ceiling.

However there is a caution for mounting on table top or event for a wall keep it at a height of 3 feet or less from the floor so as to minimize damage to the unit if it was knocked down accidentally. Do not place the detector right next to or over a fireplace or flame producing appliance. When using the side wall mount the device no closer than 4 inches from the ceiling. The maximum distance is 12 inches. Ceiling mounted smoke detectors should be mounted at least 6 inches away from where the ceiling meets the wall. The detector may be placed on the ceiling.
